It’s deja vu all over again…

mission accomplished the toyBenjamin Franklin once said that the “definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.”

This came to mind as I watched Bush in action the other day ‘plainin’ why it was still a great idea to keep up the pressure on Iran.

This came on the heels of a U.S. National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) made public on Monday that said Iran had stopped its nuclear weapons program four years ago.  This NIE was the result of consensus among the various U.S. spy agencies who obviously did not want to get tarred with another Iraq (a slam dunk).

And apparently the President has known this for quite some time.  Certainly before he dropped the “World War Three” bomb in a speech in October that made me spit my mushy peas all over the television screen (sorry Brian Williams).

Now we’ve known for some time that this is an administration that doesn’t care for inconvenient truths, but this time it looks like the lapdog media (with the exception of Faux News) isn’t buying it and neither, it seems, is anybody else.

Maybe it’s the fact that Bush is a lame duck and is desperate for something to polish up his turd of a legacy.  Afterall, what could be better than another hopeless war in the region for the next President to add the the growing things he or she will have to fix?

The American mood this time is much different from 2002/2003 when they were whipped up into a post 9/11 frenzy to “kick some ass”.  It seems like yesterday that a pumped up Bush was standing in his flightsuit declaring that the “mission was accomplished” and daring them to “bring it on”.

Unfortunately, they did and brave American men and women began to be wounded or die at an alarming rate.  Now, Bush and Cheney were a couple of chickenhawks who managed to sidestep any sort of military service and they quickly managed to marginalize anyone in the administration (Colin Powell) who had experienced real combat.

They topped it off by allowing Ronald Dumsfeld to mismanage their “slam dunk, mission accomplished” fiasco into the quagmire it has become.

After this stunning success they are beating the drums once again as the economy tanks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq drag on and on and on…

And if you think that an inconvenient NIE is going to stop them I have some prime real estate in Fallujah you might be interested in.
