Joseph Fiennes and Rob SawyerFlashForward premiered last night and I have to say that I really liked it.  In the interest of full disclosure, the show is based on my friend Rob Sawyer’s novel of the same name.  (That’s Rob in the picture with series star Joseph Fiennes)

That said, the novel and TV show are quite different, though the basic premise remains the same – all of humanity goes forward in time for two minutes and seventeen seconds and catches of glimpse of what they can expect in the future.

What really amazed me, however, was the speed that the show went from initial concept to air.  It was only about a year and half ago that Rob told us at dinner one night that there was interest in turning his novel into a network show.  And then suddenly here it is full blown, holding down a slot on Thursday night right before Gray’s Anatomy.

Best of all, the premier last night scored amazing ratings and helped ABC win the Thursday night.

Update on the New York Guide…

The proofing is finally finished and the publisher tells me that the New York Guide is off to press next week.  I love writing guidebooks, however, it is a bitch to keep them current, even before they go to press.  The shattered economy has wrecked havoc on the New York restaurant scene and I had to do some quick replacement reviews to fill slots vacated by recently closed eateries.

At times I felt like Sisyphus but the task is finally done.  Now, I get to take a couple of weeks off before starting the London guide which they would like me to have ready by Christmas, followed this spring by Paris.

Darn, I’m going to have to put off reading The Cambridge History of Hellenistic Philosophy again.  Well, maybe at the beach next summer.
