An effective query letter is an important second step to having your book published (the first step is writing a fantastic novel of course).
As I struggle to put together my synopsis I have been doing a lot of research and came across this piece from the SFWA (Science Fiction Writers of America) website. It is a really insightful and very practical guide to creating a query letter entitled “The Complete Nobody’s Guide to Query Letters” by Lynn Flewelling.
It is one of the best pieces I have read on the craft of writing query letters.
However, take into account that the article was published in 2005 and refers to sending your queries by mail. Today, most agents prefer to receive queries via email. That said, the actual writing and content of a query letter has not really changed much.
Lynn’s article wraps up with a great bit on rejection and how he deals with it. All in all well worth reading.
