With just over two weeks to go in the U.S. Presidential election the momentum is definitely swinging toward Barack Obama. He has sizable leads in most of the swing states and is making gains in states that were once considered safe Republican strongholds. Read the rest of this entry »

With all of the attention being focused on the U.S. election it is hard to believe that there is actually an election going on north of the border. Up here in the great white north we like to have our elections like we like to have our sex - quick. Read the rest of this entry »

The house of cards that once was the American financial system is falling faster than Sarah Palin’s poll numbers.
Yesterday saw the single greatest drop on the New York Stock Exchange in history. Read the rest of this entry »

Thanks to the loyal readers who noticed that I have been off the air for a few weeks.
This was not intentional, but after almost two years of Sparkplugging I was suffering a mild case of blog burnout.
It’s not that there hasn’t been a lot happening what with the Presidential debate, the Canadian election and Sarah Palin’s latest strangeness.
I just needed to take a short break.
Sad to say that my friend Douglas passed away last week after battling a long illness. I wrote a piece on eating chicken wings at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo several postings back. That was almost the last time that our family and Douglas’s spent time together. We all had a great time that day.
Again it is often the simple pleasures in life that can mean so much. As Warren Zevon once said “Enjoy every sandwich.”
As we approach our second year I have been thinking a lot about Sparkplug and over the coming months I plan to take it in a new direction. Over the next weeks I will talk about this further.
But for now, I have crawled out from under the bed and gotten back to work.

The contrast is in the shots of the crowd. I’ve been watching pundit free coverage on CSPAN of the RNC and everytime they go to a shot of the crowd the faces are always the same - white, well-fed and wrinkly. Read the rest of this entry »

While the hurricane tore across the Gulf of Mexico toward New Orleans Republicans danced the night away to the rock group ‘Hookers and Blow’ at a party thrown by the National Rifle Association.
It had to set the tone for the rest of the week as those wacky elephant men get together for an old fashioned John McCain clusterf**k. Read the rest of this entry »

Several months ago, in a posting I said that Hillary Clinton would rise up and do the right thing.
Last night she did. To a crowd of wildly enthusiastic supporters she addressed the convention. Read the rest of this entry »

Well, it’s been over a year now since we started The Big Circus Project here at Sparkplug.
For the casual reader, this is my quest to get a childhood favourite film - The Big Circus - on DVD.
Apparently Warner Brothers have the rights to the Allied Artists film catalogue and they are starting to bring them out on DVD as “Cult Classics”. Today, as a matter of fact, Warners is bringing several Allied Artists science fiction films (World Without End and Satellite in the Sky) out on DVD as Best Buy exclusive double features.
I am sure that it is just a matter of time before they reach down into the pile and pluck up The Big Circus and bring it at last to DVD.
In the meantime, it is gratifying to hear from all of the fans of TBC out there. And I thought that I was alone in my secret desire…
Batmania…
The Dark Knight continues to rack up new box office records every day. It has made over $300 million so far and is showing no sign of slowing down. There are even whispers that it could surplant Titanic as the biggest grossing film of all time.
And that would be satisfying to any true Batman fan.

I was going to bring you my review of the much anticipated Mama Mia!, however, the long line ups and sold out screenings forced me to choose an alternative film which hardly anyone seems to be interested in, a small cult film entitled - The Dark Knight.
Check out my review at Cinefantastique.

Will net a fortune for whatever scuttlefish manages to sneak a photograph of them.
(Sorry to disappoint all those who goggled the above and ended up here.)
This is just another sad reflection on our times, the corporate owned media is more obsessed with gossip and scandal than real news.
There is no more sure measure of the decline of western civilization than to watch Entertainment Tonight or The Insider any night of the week.

Revolutions come slowly in Canada. I guess that we are not hot tempered enough and just too easy going.
But as our cellular monopolists have found out this week, once we get pissed off we do rise up and lash out in anger. Read the rest of this entry »
